What’s the Deal? A ton of us use self-storage for all sorts of reasons. It’s super handy for keeping things while moving, renovating, or when you just don’t have enough space at home. But, it’s easy to fall into the trap of paying to store stuff you don’t really need. The trouble comes when we use it to avoid making tough decisions about our belongings or end up storing things we could easily keep at home.
When Should You Use Self-Storage? Why would I refer my client to storage when we are getting rid of stuff? It’s actually a very common tool in home transitions when used deliberately and strategically. If the budget allows for self-storage, you may decide to rent a unit as a:
• temporary holding space for items going to family, friends, or to be sold or dispersed.
• a short term place to “park” items that you can reasonably retrieve within 1- 6 months.
• a very small space for items that must be kept i.e. business records and seasonal items.
Choosing Wisely: If you’re going down the self-storage route, pick a place that’s clean, close by, and has friendly staff. Also, be sure you’re not signing up for more than you need!
Self-storage can be a game-changer if you’re downsizing, but in our experience, it’s best to use it strategically, and ideally, only as a short-term solution.
