If you’re planning a home transition, chances are you’ve heard the terms “decluttering” and “downsizing” thrown around. You may even think they mean the same thing! However, there are some key differences between decluttering and downsizing, making each appropriate for different situations.

FEBRUARY MONTHLY NEWSLETTER with CONTENT (2 of 2)

Subject: What Exactly is a Reverse Mortgage?

Hello, [Client/Person]!

Have you ever wondered how a reverse mortgage works and if it’s right for you?

The most common type of reverse mortgage is the home equity conversion mortgage—HECM for short—which is insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and regulated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Reverse mortgage specialist Larry McAnarney advises us that a reverse mortgage may be appropriate in some cases, but it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit.

Pros:

  • A way for seniors to supplement their monthly income
  • Does not require monthly payments to pay it back
  • No rules about how the money may be used

Cons:

  • One homeowner must be at least 62 years old
  • The home in question needs to be the primary residence
  • Must have a remaining mortgage balance that meets the lender’s minimum

DECEMBER MONTHLY NEWSLETTER with CONTENT (1 of 2)

Subject: The Season of Storage: Holiday Edition

Greetings, [Client /Person]!

The holiday season may be merry and bright, but it tends to bring an abundance of “stuff” along with it. The extra clutter can feel staggering, especially with limited space. And with holiday parties, family gatherings, and other seasonal events taking up your free time, you might feel like you just don’t have time to deal with it!

To combat the overwhelm, we recommend downsizing as you go and incorporating sorting and organizing into the time you spend decorating.  Here are some super-easy tips to help you store your festive goodies without the headache:

  1. Simplify Your Collection. Consider simplifying your collection to a theme or just the sentimental stuff.
  2. Keep Your Collection Small. When you bring in new things, such as those annual ornaments marking the year, try to remove something else to make space.
  3. Take Everything Apart. I know it’s more work but taking everything apart and putting it back together each year, like your faux trees, is going to save you much-needed space.
  4. Separate Indoor vs. Outdoor. Indoor decorations need to be climate controlled; outdoor decorations can be stored in an outdoor shed or garage.
  5. Containerize + Label. Pack everything neatly into bins and bags by season/holiday and indoor vs. outdoor then label everything.
  6. Protect Fragile Items. Protect your treasures and use options that take up less space like cardboard dividers and ornament boxes rather than packing paper and bubble wrap.
  7. Use Vertical Space. Use the walls of a closet, the back of a door, or garage ceiling racks, which are ideal for outdoor décor.

We recommend making a habit to revisit your storage area before each holiday season to declutter and make room for anything new. A little bit of planning goes a long way, and it ensures that decorating for the holidays remains a joyful experience!

DECEMBER MONTHLY NEWSLETTER with CONTENT (2 of 2)

Subject: Entertaining in a Small Space

Hello, [Client/Person]!

Over the years, we’ve had several clients tell us they held off starting their downsizing project because they didn’t want to give up their ability to entertain. We get it – who doesn’t love a good party?

The good news is, downsizing your living space doesn’t mean you have to give up hosting gatherings. With a bit of planning and creativity, you can still throw an impressive bash! Here are some key takeaways:

Guest List and Invitations: Keep your guest list manageable and consider hosting an open house or drop-by event to spread out the visits. If you’re planning a big party, you might want to look into outdoor areas or event venues.

Party Setup: Help your guests navigate the smaller space by designating specific areas for coats, bags, and gifts. Optimize your space by removing chairs from around tables and encouraging guests to head outdoors if the weather permits.

Menu and Presentation: Plan a menu that suits your smaller kitchen and do as much prep work in advance as possible. Opt for compact dishes and consider a buffet-style menu for easier dining in a smaller space.

Cleanup: Start with an empty dishwasher, trash can, and recycling bin, and make sure trash receptacles are easily accessible to your guests.

Remember, the most important aspect of hosting is making sure your guests feel comfortable and welcome. Embracing your smaller space might mean changing up some of your usual traditions, but it also opens up new possibilities for creative entertaining!
