Charleston Neighborhoods that are Popular with Downsizers

If you love the low country and also enjoy the perks of city or suburban life, Charleston may be the perfect place to spend your older years.  The charming and historic city of Charleston anchors a region defined by gracious neighborhoods, gorgeous beaches, and extensive options for outdoor activities for people of all ages.

Whether you’re moving to Charleston for the first time or setting a new path in your Charleston journey,  downsizers, retirees and seniors have tons of options for size, setting, and lifestyle in the Charleston area.

Downtown Charleston

The compact and meticulously maintained downtown Charleston is a treat for those who want easy walkability and access to quintessential southern luxury in the heart of the old town.  Enjoy history, fine dining, art, and sublime architecture.  In Charleston Village, the College of Charleston provides youthful energy and the benefits of cultural events, academic pursuits, and lots of coffee shops! Boaters love the Charleston Harbor with the famous Rainbow Row on East Bay Street, and locals love a daily stroll along The Battery.   Locals and visitors alike can make a day of shopping and dining on King Street.  We love Millers All Day Breakfast and Brunch, plus the Creole Shrimp and raw bar at The Darling.

Popular downtown neighborhoods include Elliotborough, Cannonborough, Upper King and Charleston Village.  Downsizers may be interested in Wagner Terrace, where there is potential for custom renovations to suit your lifestyle in a smaller space.  For those with grandkids, West Ashley has Charleston Zoo and historic battlegrounds to entertain visitors.

Summerville

This large suburban area is home to a small town historic district and many housing options of all sizes and price ranges.  Its proximity to I-26 offers easy access to the Charleston International Airport and area hospitals and medical centers. Football fans can enjoy the fun of local high school sports and the convenience of suburban life.  Favorite spots in Summerville include Swig and Swine, Low Country Fish Camp, and Vicious Biscuit.

Mount Pleasant

This classic low country suburb is absolute heaven for retirees and seniors who love coastal living but want shopping, services, and amenities within easy reach. Old Village offers a historic community, while Creekside Park alongside Shem Creek offers retirees a leafy canopy and features a tennis club, pool, and boat dock.

Mt Pleasant is convenient to popular beaches like Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms.  With upscale shopping and dining, and access to miles of trails and extensive parkland, active retirees can fill their days and nights with activities and entertainment.  Locals recommend Crave Kitchen & Cocktails for dinner and The Obstinate Daughter for pizza.  Our favorite place out that way is the Acme Lowcountry Kitchen for shrimp and grits prepared four different ways!

Kiawah and Seabrook

Does a private resort community sound good to you?  Kiawah is low country luxury and known for Kiawah Island Golf Resort, restaurants, and high-end shopping. Residents enjoy Beachwalker Park and Night Heron Park, and the local sights include Vanderhorst Mansion.

Seabrook Island also a private community; its a bit smaller but extremely nice:  boasting two golf courses, a tournament grade tennis center, a full-service equestrian center, and a fitness and aquatics complex.  Retirees and older people in the Seabrook community favor its beachside villas and townhouses for size and convenience.

Whether you love the in-town vibe of the historic areas or find community in one of the many friendly suburbs, you’re sure to find the perfect spot in this coastal gem. When you’re ready to make your move, we’ll be here to provide expert Charleston SC senior move help.
